PHP is not an SMTP server. You will have to be specific about which features
you are trying to
emulate. Perhaps you mean some form of Web Mail or Calendaring for which there
are several
examples. However, if you want mail clients to contact this system, PHP is not
your answer,
though there are several in the open source world which come close to
replicating most of the
Exchange functions.

There are several mail servers (SMTP) such as sendmail, postfix, exim, and
qmail which can receive
email for a domain or send out email. When you want to let users connect with
mail client apps
you will need either a POP3 or IMAP server. Web mail (ie SquirrelMail in PHP)
is another aspect
of mail.

Where people run into problems is when the calendaring portion of Exchange is
brought into the
mix. To my way of looking, a calendar should not be part of the email system.
Obviously, I am in
the minority on this considering the widespread use of Outlook (not Outlook
Express I believe) in
businesses. This normally works with MS Exchange.

SuSE Professional is a Linux distribution where they have made a lot of effort
to replace Exchange
servers and provide similar functionality. You might begin looking at that.
