username/password combo is not correct, or this user isn't allowed to
log in from this location (i.e. 'tgsstaff' can log in from localhost,
but not anywhere else, like 38.144.80.29). Double-check that your
username and password are stored correctly in your $username and
$password variables. Then make sure you log into the MySQL server and
enable your user to log in from the IP address of the webserver.

localhost and things started working.
