You might not be able to connect - depending on how the host has their firewalls setup. I.e. I cannot connect to our mysql server from home with Navicat as we don't allow for traffic through the 3306 port. However, there is no problem while on the network at work.
An alternative, if you can't connect, is to use something like phpMyAdmin (www.phpmyadmin.net) to administer your db. Just make sure you password protect the PMA directory as well as you can.
