Sessions are server side, so no...

That's the way to do it.  In fact, it's quicker, because you don't have
to read the cookie from the users machine.

As a matter of interest, the session is not closed as soon as the window
is closed - it doesn't actually know that the window has been closed.
It just dies, usually after 30 minutes of no activity.  If you get back
to the site within that time, you can reconnect to your session.
