Thanks Marc, some intersting ideas that you have given us. Much appreciated. It's not so easy to know all that is available out there and groups like this really help. My current ISP allows us to have a static IP address (on request) and also they don't mind if I have a web site on my computer, because I am roughly getting about 10megs download and 1meg upload, so bandwidth isn't a problem at the moment. They are only blocking port 25 at the moment (and for the forseeable future) because of all the spam and hackers, but all other ports are open and they will even unblock port 25 if we have a static ip address. The reason why I want to use my own web server as opposed to a web host, is that I want to be able to provide some users with a small amount of web space to host their sites. Plus It's something I have always wanted to do, host my own web site that is. I downloaded Samba and Smoothwall firewall (or is IPCop better) a while back and will someday soon (time permitting) be setting up the fileserver to serve both bindoze and linux o/s's and hopefully (if everything I hear is almost true about Smoothwall being quite a good firewall) Smoothwall to protect my network and both my development web server and the one which will be open to the Internet.
