Some organizations might have multiple authentication systems. For example, there might be an LDAP server for Unix accounts and an Active Directory server for the Windows accounts. The admin might be on the LDAP server and the manager might be on the Active Directory server. I don't know how common this is. Most places are moving towards single sign on anyway.
