--- Begin Message --- Thank you. Turns out the problem was due to something completely different (Norton Internet Security doing more than it strictly should), and the memory_limit doesn't need changing. So I don't think I will need to compile it for now.

DIY... Apache 2 / PHP source is freely available... cygwin / gcc is also freely available if you need a build environment.
