I used their book to learn the basics and found it really good. They have a chapter on the basics of relational database design and using MySQL, as well as chapters devoted to specific examples (building a shopping cart or a web-based mail client &c.). I'd certainly recommend it.
That book, php.net and phpbuilder.com have been able to answer just about all of my questions so far between them.
