For most people/sites, I recommend the following four options, in the
order given:

1) Go to atomz.com and sign up for their service (now WebSideStory
Search). http://www.atomz.com/applications/search/index.htm

2) Go to Google and register for 'Google Free' for your site.
http://www.google.com/services/free.html

3) Go to Bravenet and register for their free site-search service. If
there are several other features there that you would like to use, it's
nice to just sign up for one service (Bravenet) and be able to use them
all. http://www.bravenet.com/webtools/search2/index.php

4) Go to the PHPdig site, download the package, install it and configure
it. This has the advantage of being highly customizable, but has the
significant disadvantage of being much more time-consuming. I wouldn't go
to this one unless you have an absolute aversion to having "atomz",
"google" or "bravenet" mentioned on your front (or search) page.

Best of luck! One of these should do what you're looking for, and if not
there are several other decent ones out there.
