[php_mysql] Problem with a query!!

I have a problem with this Query, it  keeps generating error.

SELECT * FROM table WHERE s_no = $serial ORDER by id_no LIMIT
$limitvalue ,$limit

MySQL ver 3.23.56

While the same query perfectly runs on 
MySQL ver 4.1.10
