All my sites are still PHP 4.3.11 with a mySql version of 4.0.27 Mostly I do PHP/mysql for fun as most of my sites are "my sites" - I have a few that I do for others and receive pay for.
I try to use OOP when I can so I am definitely interested in that. I've been working on some LAMP applications - I think this is the next level for specific, vertical market type applications - build a simple Linux server, install the apps, and users just access the apps via their favorite browser. No learning curve there. And as broadband becomes more entrenched, the doors open for telecommuting and other remote access - for example, traveling sales people. Wade mentioned Smarty - I tried that - seems counter intuitive - at least to me. I still struggle at times with the separation and melding of server/client code, specifically PHP and JavaScript and remembering that each sides variables are different and trying to pass one to the other. If I do use JavaScript on the client side I use unobtrusive JavaScript 99.9% of the time - there are a couple of things that I have yet to master in an unobtrusive manner. I've been a member and moderator of this group for quite some time now, but haven't been that active in awhile now (other than rejecting spam messages and such). Anyway, I am hoping to start some conversations and work toward increasing the entire group's PHP interest level as well as skill level. To start it off, I'd like to know who is using PHP 5? Who is developing PHP professionally, and who is doing it as a hobby or side job? Would anyone be interested in learning about some advanced topics in PHP and OOP based PHP? Let me know. I look forward to hopefully getting a ton of emails in response and putting some new energy into this group. Thanks, David [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
