[php_mysql] hw to fix this error: fatal error. unknown function mysql_connect()

I can successfully create tables in MySQL.  But whenever I try to 
create it from within php I get the folowing error

"fatal error. unknown function mysql_connect()in 
c:\inetpub\wwwroot\...."

wht should i do to fix this error ? I am doing a project in PHP and 
also new to PHP.
