V4.0 is late because Jason wants it to be perfect :)
Meanwhile I encourage you to test the transitional branch (which will be
release as 3.3 or 3.5), which has many of the core improvements and clean ups
of 4.0, and the 3.x structure and GUI. It will help you with the transition
when the first versions of 4.0 will arrive.
