That someone was wrong -- at least according to how I had it drummed into me at school lo! these many years ago. Of course, there are exceptions to the rule (e.g. "I shop at Tesco, Marks and Spencer, and Asda"), but I would say the elements in a see-also list are short enough and unambiguous enough not to warrant a comma before the "and". It's not definitively wrong, but it's definitely not necessary. Cheers!
