XSLT was still a performance improvement over DSSSL though, right?

Maybe XSLT as a way to do everything LiveDocs need is not the way to go, but
it may prove useful to use XSLT as a very flexible layout engine over some
sort of pre-processed DocBook XML (pre-processed by the LiveDocs indexer,
that is). That way, you still have a standard way of doing the layout
(XSLT), and the benefits of the fast indexing.

It's not feasible to generate all of the phpdoc translations
around the clock using XSLT, and it cannot render a single "node"
of documentation without parsing the whole of the "book" itself
(which took 45 mins on my dual 450 MHz box; livedocs can index
all the docs using a fraction of the memory in less than 10 seconds
on the same hardware).

It was taking *days* to generate the docs for all translations
on the php.net machines.

XSLT has its place, it just doesn't fit into something the size
of the phpdoc project.
