Erm, these files were put in the functions directory so they would show
under the 'Table of Contents' on ref.pcre.  If you build the pcre part
of the manual from CVS you'll notice that both pattern.modifiers and
pattern.syntax are no longer linked.  I don't know any other way of
accomplishing this than leaving them in the functions directory.
