I know that at least the Hungarian translators do that:
- look up diff of English file (from revcheck) - change the Hungarian file according to the diff
If the diff contains irrelevant changes (ws), it is getting harder. If ws is done in a separate commit, it can be steped over (with incremental diffing).
Sure, but for the new doc style the WS-changes are relevant, no?
Probably a lot less people care about WS in the translations, it does not matter.
If it does not matter, why should these WS fixes be done in the en tree?

To make it things easier to those coming after you. It is a "coding guideline" type of thing. It is easier to understand and work with some doc source, if it follows some standards (indentation, entity usage, etc). This is less of a problem for translations, since there one file often belongs to one person, unlike in the English version, where multiple people mangle the same files.
