Ok, the "Extension Categorization" is about what I meant. Since it is
not too obvious in the manual's huge main index I would like to suggest
to set a link with text e.g. "(for categorized list see Appendix I.)"
below the entry "Function Reference".

Take a look at http://www.php.net/manual/en/extensions.php .

This is a good idea, but not all the current chapters will be able to
be grouped.

id3, image and math are just 3 chapters which have no counterparts. So
these would either need to go into a derogatory "Other" subchapter or
remain as they are.

It makes sense to group database, encryption, compression (and others)
chapters into subchapters as there are many chapters for each of these
topics.

Description:
------------
In the PHP manual, section "VI. Function Reference" meanwhile is quite
a little long. I would like to suggest to introduce subchapters for
function groups, like "database", "basic" (i.e. string, variable etc.
functions) and so on. A similiar categorization is already on the bug
reporting page in the search dialog, the "category".
I know this might impose a little work on the guys who maintain the
manual (and they are doing a great job!), but maybe they find this
proposal useful and a little time to realize it.
