I don't recall removing the optimization section.  I just double
checked my CVS commit, but don't see any change there, can you point
me to what you're looking at?

You removed it from the "configuration options" table:
-       <entry><link

-       <entry>"0"</entry>
-       <entry>PHP_INI_ALL</entry>
-       <entry></entry>

but not from the "explanation of the directives" section.

These changes are still only in the CVS version of APC, so I would
say it's only somewhat important.  Any way for me to know when the
docs have been rebuilt?

At the top (and bottom) (grayish panel) to the right you'll find "Last updated"

Btw. building the docs takes days...
