Sorry, the issue is from 5.2 onwards. 5.1 is fine with the oracle 8 client. This is noted in the manual under the oci8 section, but could I suggest we also note this in the upgrading guide given that it is "For users upgrading from PHP 5.0 and PHP 5.1".
