As another update, we have ruled out the following causes: - It's not 64 bit, since Hannes is running a box with 32 bit processor - It's not thread-safety, since I compiled and downloaded non-thread-safe versions of PHP, with no performance difference
It's probably not memory allocation speed; I tried reducing my computer's memory footprint and then ran configure.php; it was slightly faster, but nowhere near the few seconds Hannes has. It also doesn't seem to have anything to do with admin mode. I'm starting to suspect it might be a filesystem problem... -- Edward Z.
