I too am a Mac user and I too had problems getting PhD installed. In
my case, though, it was due primarily to having two installations of
PHP (version 4 and 5).
But I must say, for all the good intentions, I've often found that
using PEAR on the Mac has never been as easy as using it on other
platforms.
