I've just ran a quick check on doc-all.
There are 149,493 files with 238 starting with a BOM.
I then realised I'd forgotten to exclude the .svn folders.
That reduced to 47,512 files with 119 starting with a BOM.
Should the BOMs be removed? Do they cause a problem?
I've got a commit ready.
