This has nothing to do with using LDAP or SQL for accounts. I would suggest you provide some info about your install environment such as Linux (or Windoze), Apache (or IIS), db, PHP and phpgw versions so we have some idea of what might be going on. As for the conversion there are tools in setup to do that. You need to make the changes under step site config and then it will give you the ldap setup options use the copy to ldap option. Note all passwords are set to "x" when you do this. This is done quickly from memory so you might have to look before you click.
