You use UPDATE [...] LEFT JOIN in update_average_rate. Warning: multi-table update is available only in MySQL 4.0.4, as noted in mass_updates function. My advise: as we have not officially said that MySQL 4 was the minimum requirement, use mass_updates to hide this update.
