Now I more and more disliked the situation, once you pointed it out ;-)
So, while in the train today, I tackled the problem, and found a rather
clean solution. I implemented it both in the 32- and 64-bit versions,
and made it available in the testing release.

Hope this is OK now, and doesn't break anything.
