I don't get why a sphere is drawn here.  A full screen quad with a
gradient seems like it would meet the needs of this test, and could
cover more potential Z values if that matters.

This one looks like a candidate for being a glx specific test.

glutBitmapCharacter() makes me cry.  I don't know what to replace it
with, though -- I usually print things on the console in equivalent
locations to the screen, but I would never say that that is a *better*
visualization.
