I have a documentation suggestion and a request for help.
I got a Handspring Visor recently, and I've been syncing it with a Windows
machine until I could get a serial adapter to use the wide serial port on my
Linux box (since I use a serial mouse on that machine). I just did this,
and discovered that I can only use two serial ports at a time on a stock PC.
(The other one is my modem, which I like to keep connected at all times.)
(Odd that I've never run into that problem before.)
It took me more effort than it probably should have to discover this
problem, since nowhere in the man pages for any of the pilot-link apps, nor
in the Pilot-HOWTO, nor in the Serial-HOWTO, is this issue addressed, as far
as I've found. At the very least, the error message "Unable to bind to port
<blah>" should be documented, preferably with some discussion of the
serial-port limitation.
So, what can I do about this? I have no more ISA slots available. I guess
I could get a PCI PS/2 mouse adapter card, if such a thing exists. (Does
anyone know of such a thing?) Is there any other, cheaper way to free up
another serial port (without using an ISA slot)?
I'd be willing, though unhappy, to disconnect my modem while I sync. How
would I shuffle the ttyS ports around, if I wanted to do that?
Thanks.
