Exactly so.  Avoid columns, avoid tables, avoid fancy 
stylesheets, avoid graphics (or at least avoid large color 
graphics, small monochrome graphics are OK).

It depends on the tool you use to convert it.  I am a fan of the
commercial tool iSilo.  He's just released a new version of the
reader and the Windows converter but has not yet done a new Linux
converter.
