David, For what it's worth, the learning curve to get to where you currently are in CSS is tiny - it comes down to syntax differences. The more powerful features require learning new stuff, but it's all pretty straightforward. I can understand wanting to get the basics of the design down first before converting to Compass, but you may find it'll save you a lot of time if you use it as you go.
