I have experienced annoyances with other people's code that don't have any consistency whatsoever. Most of the time when I begin working on a new project the majority of the code is probably single quotes. Perhaps the reason for most people choosing single quotes is because, yes, it doesn't require holding shift. What bothers me the most is how other people can have code bases that have absolutely no consistency at all. It's like they copy and paste code from others and not even notice there is inconsistent quote styling. Clearly this is a very subjective topic and since James and myself prefer double quotes, because visually it looks better we take the extra keystroke hit (has never been an issue for me). I definitely hear you when you talk about bringing in third-party code because you need to modify something and their coding style is completely different. I try my best to avoid by finding other ways to include source where it isn't a part of the project; which ends up being better anyways.
