Well, you can write your own backend, just subclass  
dbtemplates.cache.BaseCacheBackend and provide the
required methods. You can then set the DBTEMPLATES_CACHE_BACKEND setting to  
the dotted path of your cache
backend, e.g. myproject.cache.SmartSiteAwareBackend.

The question is if there is something on my side that'd help you to do that.
