If my memory serves me right, I believe Photographers Formulary , in Missoula , Montana, USA offers a compensating reducer, which dissolves the blocked up areas or the highlights first, just the converse of a compensating developer. I have never used the product personally, but have seen a descriptive of the product they offer. I would assume you could make such a similar reducer at home too.
