We get asked about this every few weeks. My thought is that we should make this a priority for the next release.
As for how difficult it is, there's two parts to the problem: the core and the UI. In the core, image sequences would be implemented as specialized source factories. We know roughly how we want to do this, but haven't started on the implementation. The UI portion of the problem hasn't even been designed yet. Image sequences are essentially one use case for the more general ability to set the properties of source factories, and it is challenging to fit this into our current one-window UI. I created some mock-ups detailing one possible approach, but they were ultimately rejected as being too cluttered. Maybe it's time to revive this discussion.
