Interesting. I've seen this behavior in webkit based browsers (Chromium and Epiphany 2.28), but gecko-based browsers (Firefox, old Epiphany versions) are unaffected (you can middle click to open the images in new tabs, without problems). Maybe you could file a bug on webkit regarding that ;)
