You should maybe try the PPA for Pitivi and Gstreamer for Karmic.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:rowinggolfer/pitivi-unstable
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install pitivi


incidentally, If using this version I believe you would be well advised 
to utilise the g-streamer ppa also.
