(Jeff and I discussed this a little on the IRC channel, for anyone
following along at home).

I think this approach sounds in the right direction to me.

I went with my approach because there was already a default duration
for clips from image files that was easy for me to hook the preference
into without knowing too much about the pitivi codebase.  Basically
expediency over quality. :-)  But I think it may still be a useful
addition until something better can be developed.  I'll see if I can
get something more along the lines of what Jeff suggests working
pretty soon.
