Thanks Maria :). I wish many of our physicians saw the importance of having an endocrinologist on board before surgery. It would surprise you just how many people are turned over to their pcp's after pituitary surgery, and the pcp just doesn't know the entire scope of what they are being asked. The reason why you need to see an endo are 2 fold - one is to put you on medication to lower your elevated post - op prolactin levels (prolactinomas only have about a 55% cure rate in surgeon's hands who are not pituitary neurosurgeons). Secondly, you could suffer from post-operative hormonal loss - thyriod, cortisol, growth hormone, and interruption of your sexual hormones. Thirdly, since you are post - op, you will need to be looked at and checked over time to ensure that you don't slowly loose hormones, which may need to be later replaced. An example is one of my friends. As a young man, he was treated for acromegaly. I suppose 30 years ago. The last time I saw him, he had a stress fracture and had broken his foot. What got my attention was that he had broken it months ago and it wouldn't heal. He was to have surgery. Over the years, I had gotten the feeling that he wasn't being monitored by an endocrinologist. I worry for him. Find an endo and good luck! ![]() |
