Shark Euthanized at Pittsburgh Zoo
  • Shark had tumor

    Aug 26, 2005 9:05 am US/Eastern
Pittsburgh (AP) A shark that the Pittsburgh Zoo and P-P-G Aquarium euthanized due to illness was sick because it had a tumor on its pituitary gland.

The zoo earlier this month euthanized a blacktip reef shark after it exhibited strange, motionless behavior and tests failed to reveal what was wrong with the animal.

But a zoo spokeswoman says the shark had a tumor that wasn't caused by the aquarium's water quality or anything that the zoo did.

The aquarium suffered from a spate of shark deaths about three years ago.

Six bonnethead and two black-tip sharks died at the aquarium inOctober 2002.

Five sharks died in April and December of 2000 when an ozone machine malfunctioned and a vendor accidentally put cyanide in their tank.
