I made it to my brother-in-law's house in Cameron TX. We are going to my mother's later today (Temple TX).
The night before we left, it looked like the eye was going over our house, but it has not shifted east. We left at 8, (three vehicles) and had walkie talkies. We live west Houston area in SugarLand. Thank goodness I understand the term "improved county road", because we stayed off the mainlanes until we got north of 270. Hwy 6 was travelable until we reached Hearne. The police there were keeping traffic only to 2 lanes. There was no allowing traffic on the improved shoulders, and they wouldn't let cars travel in the middle turning lanes (5 lane road), and they wouldn't open up on of the two inbound lanes. What was a 15 mile drive ended up being 2 hrs (we had already traveled 9 hrs by this point). We were traveling w/o a.c. to conserve gas. There were folks all over out of gas etc... on the way out. I was worried when we reached Hearne, because my son's truck was down to 1/4 tank.
Fortunately, the bottle neck was Hearne, and we soon turned west to reach hwy 71.
Evidently my sense w/ the backroads had earned me a following, because when we turned west, only 4 cars were in front of us that turned before us on the farm and market road, but behind us were more than 50 cars. At hwy 71, they could go to Temple or Waco or Cameron.
There was gas in Cameron.
After about 11 hrs on the road, my sister-in-law fed us a big 'ole pot of country gravy w/meat in it and toast, and after showering, we went to sleep.
My hubby is in Houston and he is securing the house. Looks like we will have 65mph winds and not the over 100 that was predicted. My thoughts are with him.
Thanks for all of the kind thoughts... we are safe.
