Too Many Vitamins...and too few I have not taken vitamin supplements for a year per my nutritionist. When I had my vitamin levels tested this time last year, I had high or low vitamin levels - not one was in the normal range. I had extremely high (4x) B-12. My nutritionist told me to stop taking vitamins and try to get my vitamins in the food I consumed. That is almost impossible for me because I am allergic or intolerant to many foods. In June (2005), I was diagnosed with severe vitamin D deficiency. I now take 2,000 IU daily and have been told that I will need to supplement vitamin D for life. My vitamin D levels continue to be low even after taking 5x the normal dose daily. Vitamin D deficiency is a symptom of Cushing's disease. I also have osteopenia, as well as, osteomalacia (severe vitamin D deficiency.) Oddly enough, and most likely due to a parathyroid tumor, I have high levels of calcium and ionized calcium. So, I cannot take any calcium supplements. I only take my vitamin D supplements at this time. I have found vitamins to be very difficult to balance. High and low levels of vitamins can add to your symptoms from the pit tumor and hormonal imbalance. I have fewer aches and pains when I am taking my vitamin D. I have probably been deficient for many years, but it was only just discovered this past summer. Vitamin absorbtion by the body can be hindered by the hormonal imbalance caused by the pit tumor. You may want to ask your PCP or endo to test your vitamin levels as well as your hormone levels. Vitamin deficiency and excess can cause many symptoms. Symptoms that you may be able to simply control with your vitamin intake. It just may help you feel better. Take care. Meri |
