Dexamethasone is used to try to shut down the acth levels. There are three kinds of tests, the overnight test where the dex is taken at 11 p.m. and the blood is drawn the next day. The second kind is the low dose test where blood is drawn for acth and cortisol and a 24 hr urine free cortisol test is done. Over the next two days, blood is drawn (in most cases) and a 24 hr ufc is done. Typically on the 3rd day of the test, the doctor raises the testing protocol to the high dose dex test, to differentiate between acth dependent cancer and possibly an adrenal tumor. This test is used to diagnose Cushings. It isn't perfect however, and people with mild or cyclical disease might suppress normally with the dexamethasone. Josie, I am glad your doctor is doing this test. The good news is that the symptoms are short lived. Keep us posted and big hugs. Minnie |
