My experience is as follows... I was not getting my period for over a year (at
about 38/39 years old...) and was at the time considering having another child
with my new husband. I went to my ob-gyn who sent me to an endocrynologist
after unsuccessfully putting me on birth control to try to get my period back.
The endo noticed I was lactating and declared I had a prolactinoma. He put me
on Dostinex and told me I should get my period back and could try for a child.
If I got pregnant, I would go off the meds for the duration of the pregnancy,
could not breastfeed, and would return to the Dostinex immediately after the
birth. Well.... I went on the Dostinex and to be honest, I can't tell you if
it's the side-effects of the medicine or the actual symptoms of the
prolactinoma, but over time it has entirely changed me. I now experience:
apathy, fatigue, memory issues, headaches (although not as bad now as I had
before), anxiety/panic attacks, not wanting to be touched, not wanting to leave
my home, hot flashes, the list goes on... I left my job and thankfully my
husband has been very supportive of me. However, unlike some on these boards
who have successfully gone on to get pregnant... due to my
symptoms/side-effects my husband and I have decided it would be best not to
bring a child into these circumstances. As I said, all this occurred over
time... 2-3 years have gone by and not much has changed. I get my hormone
levels checked every 6 months and they have found nothing substantial to help
me. I continue to keep my eyes open for a new endo. I'm not trying to be
discouraging, just want you to be aware of what some of us have experienced. I
wish you health and hope all goes well for you. Please do not stop looking for
a pituitary specialist who will listen to you about everything you are
experiencing.
