----------------------------------------------------------- New Message on Pituitary Chat
----------------------------------------------------------- From: Willard1H Message 6 in Discussion Hi, Ashley (and everyone), We're hoping you have good news from your meeting with the neurosurgeon on Oct. 15. This being your first, and all, hope you took some notes. My own Oct. 15 neuro meeting didn't turn out so great. But on the other hand, it could have been worse! Lemme just quote bits from an email I sent out to some of my closest friends yesterday: --------------------------- It was a long, boring visit at University of Alabama - Birmingham's Kirklin Clinic, with very little to report. Dr. Winfield Fisher said he saw some slight slimming of my macro prolactinoma tumor in the morning's new MRI images. The neurosurgeon's assistant, who specializes in interpreting the magnetic resonance imaging, had earlier disagreed. She said she saw no difference from the tumor's April 2008 size. Then it had shrunken to 1/3 of its Dec. '07 size. Since I just went to a double dose of the drug Dostinex, we do expect it to dramatically diminish its dimensions. If it hasn't by April 2009, then we'll look into transsphenoidal surgery, which is unlikely. According to the _FAQ file at Pituitary Network Assn_ (http://www.pituitary.org/disorders/frequently_asked_questions_about_transsphenoidal_surgery_for_pituitary_adenomas_a_patient_guide.aspx) ., "Tumors which secrete high amounts of the hormone prolactin usually respond to medical therapy so that surgery is not required." -------------------------- One friend replied, saying she was sorry I received bad news. BAD!! Could have been much worse! It does seem like six months of pain, deprivation, stress and misery, for very little payback. But on the positive side, my memory is ten times better. I have fewer moments like hot flashes and other medical extremes. I finally got my bank balance to stop hemorrhaging. When my coworkers call on me, I feel like a much more capable worker. My friends call my activity on Pituitary Chat my "ministry." I tell them my message board involvement is going well. It helps me to heal and cope, and at the same time to offer aid and comfort to my fellow Pitters.
