Also, AFAIUI, it is not possible to use the Maven Release plugin for
Apache releases;

They need to be tarballs and placed in separate location for voting
first, and Maven is "too automated" with the wrong workflow for the
plugin. It is actually quite a lot of work to do an Apache release :-(
Try to remember the following;

 - Run RAT. It is a tool that will report the state of the release
from a legal point of view, i.e. investigate files for licenses. Post
the generated output in a file at the same location as the release
tarball and maven artifacts.

 - Use your $HOME/public_html directory on people.apache.org, which
will be available from browsers via http://people.apache.org/~niclas
(equivalent). Remember to delete the files after they have been copied
to /dist, since Infra is complaining that too many people have too
large home directories and diskspace for 2000+ people quickly
aggregates.

 - LICENSE file; Containing all licenses that are part of the release.

 - NOTICE file; Attribution of Copyright holders as required by many licenses.

 - DISCLAIMER file; A text saying that this is an Incubating release
and not endorsed by Apache.

 - Those 3 files need to be in the root directory of the tarball(s),
and in every artifact published via Maven.

 - "incubating" is part of the version, which in turn is part of the
release tarball name.

Martijn has much more release experience than me and can probably chip
in some more.

Cheers
