I got similar messages with yours. Can you try again with binutils >= 2.21?
Binutils 2.20 seems to have several bugs in assembler.

This is with gcc 4.5.4 and binutils 2.20.1. Backing out the top 2 patches
(the n8 fastpaths) makes it work again.
