This is actually the v2 of the previous patch I sent, but I changed the summary by recommendation on the review. I removed the macros and instead included another version of the same functions that were changed with precompiling condition. Also, I turned COMPUTE_SHIFT_MASK macros into no-op for little endian, but I am not sure I used the best way there is. I just kind of followed the model used in other files of the source tree. If there is a better way, please let me know. By the way I tested it all on ppc64le, ppc64 and powerpc (thanks for the tips, Siarhei).
