4G TRENDS:
LEARN HOW 4G WIRELESS TECHNOLOGY IS TRANSFORMING BUSINESS AND CREATING
OPPORTUNITIES
In spite of the difficult economic climate, advances in 4G wireless
technology are continuing to move forward – undeterred and sometimes
impatiently. Developments and deployments of 4G technology are
demonstrating a significant potential for disruption to current
business models across the entire wireless industry. From consumer to
enterprise and from developer to operator the value and promise of
Anywhere connectivity is generating innovation and opportunity.

4G wireless networks incorporate a broad spectrum of technologies.
>From WiMAX and LTE infrastructures, backhaul and femtocell solutions
to mobile Internet devices (MIDs), mobile commerce (m-commerce) and
consumer and mobile enterprise applications, 4G wireless brings
opportunity and challenge to business and governments. Wireless
operators around the globe are faced with a growing demand for a
“better, faster and cheaper” Anywhere access to the Internet and
critical business applications. Governments are faced with a demand
for greater access to services by citizens and greater access to
valuable radio frequency spectrum by operators and service providers
who want to deliver value to their customers.

As a leader, do you understand the impact of the evolution of wireless
technology on your business? What opportunities are available for
you to access new revenue or to gain operational efficiencies? Will
4G wireless technologies disrupt your current business models or
process? These are just a few “top of mind” questions that business,
government and technology leaders are pondering today, to benefit from
the future.
Yankee Group’s Events and Publications Division has created a focused
and effective opportunity for you to learn, stay current and benefit
from all that this important technology evolution promises. 4G World
2009, a comprehensive, 4 day conference and exhibition delivers
detailed insights into the complete 4G wireless ecosystem and
provides business, technology and thought leaders alike a forum to
develop understanding, partnerships and profit.

4G World 2009’s program includes keynote speakers from the industry’s
foremost experts. It incorporates focused summits on 4G wireless
technologies and mobile applications. 4G World’s specialized
workshops will examine radically new business models through
technology best practices. Thoughtfully created networking events are
part of the program that provides attendees with exceptional
opportunities for sharing experiences or developing collaboration.
This powerful agenda is provided in an unprecedented single-venue
conference, September 15 – 18 at McCormick Place in Chicago.

MOBILE INTERNET TRENDS:
HOT SUMMER - HOT RUMORS OF HOT NEW DEVICES FOR SPRINT
By Andrew Mitchell

It has been barely 3 months since Samsung announced news of a
dual-mode MID for Sprint at CTIA Wireless 2009. Sporting the latest
in "cool factor", the Samsung Mondi's only let down was that its
dual-mode capabilities were limited to WiMAX and WiFi. That meant no
immediate support for voice services on Sprint's network.

At the time Omar Khan, Senior Vice President, Strategy, Product
Management and Customer Service, Samsung Mobile explained that
"Samsung has a roadmap for tri-mode devices later this year." It now
appears that "later this year" might not be so far away. Rumors
surfaced last week that Sprint will be testing a Samsung tri-mode
device, one that is said to be an Android platform and equipped with a
CDMA radio capability. 4G Trends has heard and seen the rumors and
can't help but be enthused by the possibilities although we'd prefer
to think that the device might be a tri-mode Mondi as opposed to an
Android-powered device.

 WIMAX TRENDS:
UK 2.6GHZ AUCTION PUSHED BACK AGAIN, TO 2010
By Caroline Gabriel

The UK, once set to be the first European country to auction 2.6GHz
spectrum for ‘4G’ services, is delaying its spectrum sale yet again.
In November, regulator Ofcom indicated it hoped to award licenses by
mid-2009, and in April it said it promised to hold the auction “as
soon as possible”. Now it has “withdrawn” that statement and, in the
wake of the new Digital Britain report recommendations, will bundle
the 2.6GHz and digital dividend spectrum sales into one super-auction
next year.

The delay is a further blow for operators that had hoped to steal an
early march in mobile broadband, especially those aiming to challenge
the cellular incumbents, possibly with a WiMAX network. While a few
countries, notably Sweden, have sold 2.6GHz licenses, most auctions
will take place in 2010, as operators create strategies that also
take account of the sale of  analog TV spectrum around 800MHz;
possible broadband stimulus initiatives in some markets; and the
ruling, by many regulators, that 3G services can be expanded using
current GSM frequencies around 900MHz.
