4G TRENDS FEATURE:
OVERHYPING TECHNOLOGY, AGAIN
By Chris Nicoll, Distinguished Research Fellow, Yankee Group
We seem to be riding the crest of the next wave of ‘next generation’. We no
longer just read books, we read them electronically. We no longer look at
photo albums, we have digital picture frames. We don’t have ‘phones’ any more,
we have ’smartphones’. And we no longer talk on the phone (well, some of us
anyway), we ‘chat’ on Facebook but we do watch movies, TV, Sports, send
messages, check email, the weather, traffic, buy pizza, find the nearest
Starbucks and even do banking on our “phones”. And the next generation of the
wireless networks is going to enable us to do all of this faster, with greater
satisfaction, making more money then ever before for the operators. Is it me
or is the hype getting a little out of control? AGAIN.
No doubt we are riding a wave of uniquely multifunction devices that enable us
to do things we like or want to do. The Kindle and Nook are cool, the iPad
just that much cooler (and 2 million sold in 56 days? Impressive - and I don’t
have one of the 2 million BTW). My BlackBerry Bold is really cool and the best
business tool I’ve owned in a long while, my Motorola Droid the coolest
personal entertainment device since my old Gameboy. Sprint is sending an EVO
my way and I’m really looking forward to the bigger screen and integrated WiFi
hotspot to try out. Oops, have I said the ‘4′ word yet? Didn’t think so. But
it’s the white elephant in the room.
Going along with all of these cool devices is the anticipation of applications,
services and programs that over the advanced 3G and coming 4G networks (meaning
HSPA+, LTE and WiMAX) will greatly enhance the user experience. But at least
initially, by how much? We’ve already seen the bloggers go crazy over the VZW
Boston Coffee House LTE test running at 8.5Mb. Except I get 2 ½ times that
speed on my cable modem and the coffee is cheaper. And it serves nearly a
dozen different devices when I want it to. (Not to mention a 42″ HDTV which is
a BIT bigger than 4.3″). Sprint’s President of 4G Matt Carter at a recent
analyst event said it best; “4G is like watching HDTV instead of regular TV”.
It’s the same, but a lot better. And that is great.

BACKHAUL STRATEGIES AND CORE CONVERGENCE FOR MOBILE OPERATORS Summit Hosted by
Light Reading
The evolution to 4G requires that mobile operators adopt a new, flat, all IP
network architecture. Whether an operator is planning the evolution of their
existing 3G network or building a new 4G network from the ground up, careful
planning is required to optimize coverage and capacity within a given spectrum
allocation.

MOBILE INTERNET TRENDS
F5 STEPS OUT OF THE DATA CENTER AND HEADS TO THE CLOUD
By Zeus Kerravala, Distinguished Research Fellow, Yankee Group
Cloud computing is being touted as the next great computing revolution but
actual, live deployments are limited. One of the biggest barriers holding
cloud computing back is security. Yankee Group’s 2009 Transforming
Infrastructure and Transforming Application survey revealed that the #1 barrier
to cloud computing was security. Despite this fact, there really hasn’t been
any vendor addressing the unique security needs of cloud computing. At Interop
last month, Application Delivery Networking market leader F5 announced
enhancements to its BIG-IP products to secure applications that are deployed in
the cloud.

WIMAX TRENDS:
ASIAN 4G DEVELOPING RAPIDLY BUT IN FRAGMENTED PATTERN
By Caroline Gabriel, Contributing Editor, 4G Trends
The pattern of wireless deployments has always been far more varied and
fragmented in Asia than in the more homogeneous Europe, and mobile broadband is
no exception. As the Indian BWA auction rumbles on, with WiMAX and TD-LTE
bidding for a place in the wireless picture, Thailand looks set to leapfrog 3G
altogether, Korea is expanding the reach of WiMAX, and Indonesia aims to become
a tier one country in terms of fast wireless.
