This is happening because build-rdeps is not trusting grep-dctrl and checks the Build-Depends(-Indep) line again to ensure the line contains the given package name. It, however, is using the package name literally in the regular expression so the + is treated as a metacharacter. We can either solve this by using \Q$package\E or trusting grep-dctrl's results in the first place.
